If you’re new here, paid subscribers receive Story Work exercises every Sunday night at 8 pm et. Story Work is the name of my new book which is forthcoming from Broadleaf in November 2025. The term describes my signature process of reflecting, reclaiming, and reimagining the stories of our lives. It involves looking at your life experiences as creative material that you have the power to shape. For the next eight weeks, our story work series is focused on life as a creative process.
Before we get into this week’s story work exercise, I want to remind you that we will be joined this week by Lindsey Van Wagner, author of Spirit Vigilante: Telling My Truth to Help You Live Yours. Lindsey is an author, speaker, instructor, and wellness advocate from the Washington, DC area, known for empowering clients to live with intention and purpose. We will be chatting about the book, personal storytelling, and her unique creative journey and process. Everyone who registers to attend will be entered to win a copy of the book.

out of your head, into your body:
Forcing instead of allowing.
I’ve caused so much friction in my creative journey by being impatient, tying myself in knots to make things happen in my way and my time. Wanting quick results to tender, sacred work.
In our current series, life as a creative process, we are taking it slow.
What I discovered over the past seven years of slowing down and prioritizing self-care is that I could schedule my life to experience it deeply and create a pace that is empowering for me. This has been the game-changing shift: realizing that the key to a fulfilling creative practice is leaning into my unique needs, values, and gifts, so I can create from a place of natural curiosity, flow, joy, and service.
Through this series, we are starting on the inside with our intentions and taking our time to do the inner work before radiating that energy out into action steps and habits.
So far we’ve covered:
Week One: Soulful intentions - Instead of fixating on specific outcomes, soulful intentions focus on how we want to feel and the values we want to embody. Soulful intentions are about progress, not perfection. They allow you to adjust your expectations through life’s changes and evolutions. They allow us to incorporate habits that don’t just check off boxes but truly enrich our lives.
Week Two: The deeper why - If we want to align our actions with our soulful intentions, we need to integrate all parts of ourselves and consider their motivations. Getting clear on your why - and the different factors that affect it - will give you the courage and conviction to make choices and develop habits that align your parts to cooperate with your values.
Continue on with us as we explore creative embodiment.
creative embodiment
When an intention is embodied, it changes an aspirational thought into a devoted commitment. Embodying our intentions requires a vivid understanding of what we want and why it matters.
